Internet marketing news: Yahoo! to Acquire AOL?
Internet marketing strategy:
Rumours have been going around in the Internet marketing community that Yahoo! has resumed talks with Time Warner regarding the possible takeover of AOL.
Yahoo! did make an offer for the acquisition of AOL last year, but the talks broke down because the two sides failed to come to an agreement.
Some observers are speculating that this move is no more than an attempt to impress the stock market, but it is obvious for all to see. Since staunch rivals Google bought YouTube a few weeks ago, the search engine giant has enjoyed massive press publicity and a jump of 10% in its stock value.
With all the recent hype and publicity that Google has generated, it would be interesting to see how long Yahoo! can remain silent. And its response to all that is to rekindle talks of a possible AOL takeover.
I have never doubted the ability of Yahoo! with regards to their business dealings, but this is not the first time that a potential business deal involving Yahoo! has stalled.
Yahoo! has been negotiating with Facebooks for a possible takeover in a deal worth around US$1 billion, but the talks have since stalled as of mid-october.
If Yahoo! is to pull itself out of its recent slum, then they would have to do something as high profile as Google's purchase of YouTube. The takeover of AOL may or may not cause ripple effects that were seen after the YouTube purchase, but at least it will give Yahoo! some renewed optimism that it can still compete neck-and-neck with Google.
