Yet Another Google Acquisition - Who Is It This Time?
Internet marketing strategy:
It seems like Google's bottomless pit is threatening to buy up just about anyone that catches its attention.
It was just a few weeks ago when the search engine giant bought YouTube for US$1.65 billion. Now, Google has made yet another purchase for an undisclosed fee: Jotspot.
So what is Jotspot all about?
It is a Silicon Valley based start-up that helped pioneer the market for web-based business software like spreadsheets.
JotSpot, which is now 3 years old, had developed a series of online productivity software programs that are very similar to Microsoft Word and Exel spreadsheet. But instead of running on individual computers, JotSpot applications are delivered as web-based services.
For me, this is yet another positive move by Google to acquire Jotspot. By doing so, they are effectively throwing down the gauntlet to Microsoft: "Watch out, we are coming after you". And they certainly fired the first salvo with this plan to provide business software solutions in order to compete directly with Microsoft.
But it is definitely questionable as to why they made another acquisition so soon after such a high profile purchase. It is a case of trying to do too much at once. They should just let the dust fully settle on YouTube, before going on another shopping spree.
But then again, when you are Google, nothing is too difficult to accomplish.
